PVB storage and handling: avoiding moisture defects
PVB is hygroscopic and absorbs moisture from ambient air, which directly degrades bond quality. Store sealed rolls at 15–25 °C and 20–30% relative humidity, condition material to line conditions before opening the pack, and reseal partly used rolls immediately.

Why moisture matters more than anything else
PVB bonds to glass through a hydrogen-bonding mechanism at the interface, and water competes directly with that bond. Interlayer that has taken up moisture produces laminates with weak adhesion, haze, bubbles and edge delamination — and none of those defects are recoverable after the autoclave.
This is the reason a processor with an excellent autoclave and a chronic defect rate should look first at the store room, not at the cycle profile.

Handling a roll from store to line

Condition before opening
Move the sealed roll into the lamination room and leave it to reach room conditions before breaking the seal. Opening a cold roll in a warm room condenses moisture directly onto the film.

Open only what you will use
Interlayer begins taking up moisture the moment the packaging is opened. Cut what the run needs rather than exposing the full roll.

Reseal immediately
Reseal partly used rolls in their moisture barrier as soon as cutting is finished, and return them to controlled storage.

Handle with clean gloves
Fingerprints on the interlayer surface become permanent visible marks in the finished laminate.

Check before lay-up
Inspect the sheet for surface contamination, creases and edge damage before it goes into the assembly. It is cheaper to discard a sheet than to scrap a finished panel.
Frequently asked questions
What is the shelf life of PVB interlayer?
In sealed original packaging under correct storage conditions, shelf life is generally stated in months rather than years, and the supplier's figure should be followed. Once packaging has been opened, the effective life is much shorter and depends on room conditions.
Does PVB need refrigerated storage?
It needs controlled storage rather than refrigeration. Some interlayer grades historically required cold storage to control tack; modern tack-controlled grades generally do not, but they still require the 15–25 °C and 20–30% RH window.
Can interlayer that has absorbed moisture be recovered?
Sometimes, by reconditioning in a controlled-humidity room, but results are inconsistent and depend on how far the moisture content drifted. For work where laminate quality is certified, reconditioned material is not worth the risk.
