The advantage that decides most projects
Printed interlayer produces decorative glass that is also safety glass. Because the artwork sits inside a PVB laminate, the finished panel retains post-breakage fragment retention — so it can be specified for balustrades, overhead glazing, partitions subject to impact requirements, and anywhere else the standard demands a safety laminate.
Decorated glass produced by surface methods does not carry that. In practice this frequently settles the specification before colour range or cost enter the discussion.
What a printed laminate specification needs
- Artwork at final size with bleed, in vector or high-resolution raster.
- The exact glass build-up the print will be laminated into — it changes how colour reads.

Can printed interlayer be used externally?
Yes — the print is sealed inside the laminate and protected from weather and UV by the outer glass ply. For fully exposed edge conditions, confirm edge sealing details, since edge moisture ingress affects printed laminates the same way it affects clear ones.
How does printed interlayer compare on cost to ceramic frit?
For simple repeating patterns in one or two colours, frit is usually cheaper. For photographic imagery, gradients or multi-colour artwork, printed interlayer is generally more economical — and it does not require a separate firing step in the glass line.
Is there a minimum order for printed interlayer?
Yes, and it varies with artwork complexity and panel size. Because each project is effectively a bespoke print run, minimum quantities are higher than for clear or standard coloured film.
